Project title: Mechanisms and determinants of invasion success in terrestrial arthropods
I am investigating the influence of three primary drivers on invasion success of terrestrial arthropods: introduction pathway; characteristics of the introduced taxa; and environmental invasibility. My study system is the pests and pathogens transported and introduced via international agricultural plant trade, with a specific focus on Acari (mites). I will examine the drivers and their components independently and in conjunction to investigate questions relating to transport, establishment and distribution of invasive agricultural pests. Questions include: how effective is border bio-security; what influences transport of species; how do introductions, species and environment interact during establishment; and can these factors predict global pest distributions?
